Gov. Cuomo Would Rather Tax Students Than Millionaires

Speaking about the recently enacted SUNY tuition increase on WCNY’s “Capitol Pressroom” today, Governor Cuomo stated “Well, students would like to have no increase ever. I understand that. I wish we were in a position to do that, but there’s something called financial reality that we have to deal with.”

In response, students from the Save Our SUNY Coalition held a rally outside the Governor’s office on October 27th. They demanded to know why the Governor is choosing to give millionaires a $5 billion tax cut while imposing a 30% tuition increase on students that is little more than a regressive back-door tax on New Yorkers pursuing higher education. SUNY-Albany student Angelica Clarke said “apparently the financial reality of New York is that students and members of the 99% get tuition increases and budget cuts while the 1% get tax breaks.” Fellow SUNY-Albany student Simon Tangney added, “Students could teach the Governor something about shared sacrifice; Cuomo speaks of ‘financial reality’ as if he doesn’t have a hand in its creation.”
